  • Nick is able to pick up and drop off your instrument(s) at your chosen location within Davidson County, either at your home or a public place of your choosing.

  • On-Site work is a great option for those with a large collection of instruments or for those who want to be present for a collaborative experience, with a few necessary requirements:

    • Clean indoor working space

    • Table or other easily workable surface large enough to allow your instrument to be laid down lengthwise

    • Calm environment to allow for focused work

  • Nick’s average turnaround is 2-3 weeks depending on the quantity/severity of the job. He will keep in contact with you through the entire process to keep you updated and when your instrument is ready for delivery!

setup process

1.

Remove strings if replacing with a new pack, or moving strings out of the way to work on fretboard

2.

Clean instrument's body, neck, and headstock with a microfiber cloth and guitar polish cleaner.  Will remove hardware pieces such as saddles or string trees to clean out underneath if necessary.

3.

Evaluate the instrument for potential repair, checking hardware and tightening screws or loose hex nuts, testing electronics to make sure they work properly, checking frets for any buzzing, and investigating any damage areas to let client know about any potential future problems.

4.

Clean/polish frets to bring out their shine, removing any grime and smoothing out the surface for a nice feel and longer string life.

5.

Clean fretboard with guitar cleaner if the neck is maple, or clean and condition ebony or rosewood necks with fretboard conditioner.

6.

Restring the instrument or replace the old strings after cleaning and conditioning them with a string cleaner.

7.

Tune the strings to the clients desired tuning and stretch new strings for tuning stability.

8.

Check the truss rod of the instrument and make any necessary adjustments, allowing for a very slight bow in the neck to allow string clearance and remove potential fret buzz.  A completely flat fretboard is possible, but buzzing will occur if the frets are not perfectly level with each other.

9.

Adjust the action of the bridge to my standard height of .06 of an inch on the bass string and .05 on the high string for electric guitars, or to the client's desired action.  For acoustic instruments with a single bone saddle, the action is lowered using a belt sander to remove the bottom of the saddle while keeping the bottom flat so when reinserted in the bridge it fits snuggly.

10.

If the instrument has individual saddles, adjust the remaining saddles to match the radius of the fretboard, allowing for easier fretting of all strings.

11.

Adjust the intonation of the strings by moving the saddles of each string closer to the fretboard or farther away so the open note and the fretted 12th note are as close to an octave apart as possible, allowing the higher frets to be in tune.  For acoustic instruments with a single saddle, intonation is not easily adjusted.  A new saddle that accounts for intonation would need to be installed if better intonation is desired.

12.

Check the height of the string at the nut and file the slots to the perfect height to have the lowest possible action on the first fret without any open string buzz.  If the slot is too low, a temporary fix is possible, but a new nut is recommended.

“Professional, prompt, great communication, and amazing results!! Had an early 2000’s Gibson Blueshawk that needed fret work and a new action setup. I hadn’t liked the way my guitar played in over 10 years and just used other instruments. Nick got it playing like a whole new guitar; action is like butter now and it’s been heaven getting to actually enjoy plugging it in again as it really does sound amazing.. thank you, thank you Nick!”

chad ★★★★★

“Nick did a wonderful job with both of my guitars! The input jack on my Fender was super loose, and he seamlessly fixed that as well as adjusted the intonation and action on the guitar, making it so much easier to play. Highly recommend him!”

grace ★★★★★

“Nick was super easy to communicate with, incredibly fair priced and turned it around quickly. The guitar plays great, and he even threw in a new pick guard for free when some glue got on the original. Cannot recommend enough and will definitely use him for future guitars without hesitation!”
